When fantasy football time comes around, one of the most valuable resources to a smart team owner is watch all the mock drafts out there. Watch the big sports sites as they go through their mock drafts. Teams get compiled by some of the sports writers, ex-players and other experts. You get to see who they would draft and in what order. Going through those prior to your league's draft day can give you a few good opinions on which players are consistently chosen at or near the top, and who you should take if still available when your turn comes up. They chart the drafting of all roster positions relative to each other, helping team owners see the strength of one versus the other - for example, seeing that there have been no tight ends drafted before the third or forth round, you should be sure you don't draft one with your first round pick.

Year in and out, mock drafts typically play out around the same, with the first round normally running backs, with a few star wide receivers and quarterbacks thrown in, the second round normally for wide receivers, the third round where tight ends start being picked, defenses not until the 7th or 8th round, and the first kicker not being picked until around the 9th round.

For the 2005 football season, here are some of the top picks on the minds of the experts - use this as a guide on who to draft in your fantasy pool and when:

  • LaDainian Tomlinson - a running back with the biggest upside and probably the first pick overall
  • Peyton Manning - probably the top QB out there right now and likely to be picked within the top 5 picks of the first round
  • Randy Moss - the top wide receiver and usually picked in the bottom half of the first round
  • Tony Gonzalez - the top tight end pick, likely drafted around the early 3rd round
  • Baltimore Ravens - one of the best defensive teams and projected to be picked in the 7th round
